As a year long project in Marine Biology we will be participating in monitoring the water characteristics and growth of organisms in the Cordova boat harbor.
We will attempt to answer several questions via our monitoring project:
Question 1: What growth will we see on tires at different depths in the harbor throughout the season?
Question 2: What specific organisms are found living in the Cordova boat harbor?
Question 3: Is there a relationship between water and weather conditions and the growth of organisms in the harbor?
Question 4: How do the water characteristics compare each month and why?

Start Day:
A. Divide into groups & lower the tires down at different depths
B. Take a GPS location of the tire in the harbor
C. Learn to measure weather conditions & record:
  1. Barometric pressure reading
  2. Air temperature reading
  3. Weather Description:
  • Wind speed (Beaufort Wind Scale)
  • Precipitation type & magnitude
  • Cloud cover
D. Learn to measure water conditions & record:
  1. Tide level
  2. Water temperature
  3. Salinity
  4. pH (acid/base) level
  5. Clarity using a Secchi Disk
  6. Dissolved oxygen level
  7. Description of water condition/quality:
  • Debris
  • Sheen

Growth Monitoring Days:
A. Measure & Record weather & water measurements as done on the start day.
B. Carefully pull up tires from water & photograph
C. Identify and record species present using common name. (Bring back a sample if needed to correctly ID!)
D. Record the number of organisms with a quantity tally or a percent surface area covered.
E. Carefully re-lower the tire into place.
F. Exchange the weather & water measurements from Step #A with other groups.

Growth Monitoring Days - October - May
Include a picture of your tire.
Include a picture of 1 exact species you found, labeled with the common name (either that you took or that you found a matching picture for)
Record the number of organisms with a quantity tally or a percent surface area covered, include all different organisms you found on your tire (you may want to make a table).
Record the weather & water data (you may want to make a table).
Write a comparison of water monitoring: What is different this month & why do you think there is or isn’t a difference? Be specific.

FINAL HARBOR MONITORING:
1. Include a final picture of your tire.
2. Record the number of organisms with a quantity tally or a percent surface area covered, include all different organisms you found on your tire (you may want to make a table).
3. Record the weather & water data (you may want to make a table).
4. Upload a graph of your water quality data using Create-a-Graph and the directions on the handout to show temperature, dissolved oxygen, & clarity.
5. Write a summary paragraph in complete sentences that includes the following:
  • Where you surprised by the type &/or amount of organisms you found on your tire throughout the year? EXPLAIN why or why not.
  • Based on your data, do you think there is a relationship between water/weather conditions and the growth of organisms in the harbor? EXPLAIN your answer.
  • What did you learn from doing this activity throughout the year? Related to Marine Biology!
  • What would you change about the activity to improve it for future classes?
